“We both had to kiss a lot of frogs before we found our princes in each other,” says Shay of Kirksey. But, for both, love was worth the wait. Kirksey’s surprise proposal in front of 5,000 people at the preview party for Houston’s annual Nutcracker Market sealed the deal for Shay, who’d met his future husband on Match.com, and found himself smitten from their very first date. Professional event planner and decorator extraordinaire Kirksey executed the couple’s spectacular nuptials at The Ballroom at Bayou Place, where the pair’s shared love of Impressionist art inspired a lavish design scheme in varying shades of rich violet, enhanced by LED screens showcasing works by Degas, Monet, and other famed painters, as well as real-time images of reveling guests. All this, in spite of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Harvey a mere week before the wedding: “We opted to continue as planned, and celebrate not only our wedding but the perseverance and strength that Texans displayed during this time.”
