Downtown Aquarium Wedding by Kreative Angle Photography

Though they’d been friends since they were 10—best friends all through high school—Shannon was nevertheless “speechless” when, six years into their romantic relationship, Colin proposed while she was curled up with a hot chocolate, fumbling for the TV remote. Their spring wedding, which started with a church ceremony where Shannon’s beloved brother walked her down the aisle then high-fived her before dropping her off at the altar, gave way to an equally joyful reception at the Downtown Aquarium. Echoing the Nautilus Ballroom’s marine theme, Shannon and Colin went with a palette of cobalt blue and deep purple, and treated guests to seafood specialties including gumbo and crab-stuffed fillet of sole. As Shannon recounts, “The aquarium was decked out with lanterns and treasure chests filled with glow necklaces. The guests were asked to write date ideas on tongue depressors from the chests—we have some doozies. The DJ had everyone moving the entire night, guests sent us off with wedding wands through a tunnel out of the location. We then drove off in a cherry red Challenger and spent the evening enjoying the luxury of Hotel Icon.” Just how lovely does Shannon look in that Jasmine Couture gown from The Princess Bridal? Sigh. Congrats to the happy couple, and a high-five from us here at HWB to Kreative Angle Photography for the fine, fine photos.

Classic Wedding with a Charitable Heart by Lindsay Elizabeth Photography

“When Michael proposed, we started wondering where to find the right venue for us,” recounts Houston bride Carolyn. “Fortunately we thought about the Brookwood Community, a wonderful residential organization right outside of Katy, where adults with disabilities can thrive and learn to contribute meaningfully. My mother and I had often eaten in the café there and we loved to volunteer with the organization.” Carolyn explains that the Brookwood Community had only recently started hosting weddings—and she was thrilled to be among the first to take advantage of the community’s “beautiful worship center” and lovely, sunlight-filled café space. In her diaphanous Watters gown from Mia Bridal Couture, Carolyn made her wedding dreams come true, with a timeless summer celebration filled with personal photos, handmade signs and touches of blue, purple and green. The best part? “The profits from the wedding went to a scholarship fund to help residents live at the Brookwood Community. We were so grateful to have a wedding that benefitted a cause—and we enjoyed that we didn’t compromise on anything to host it there!” Congratulations, and happiest wishes to Carolyn and Michael. And big thanks to Lindsay Elizabeth Photography for the lovely, lovely photos!

HWB Inspiration Board: Blue Glass and Bright Blooms

The beauty of blue glass. Vintage blue “Ball” mason jars, frosted blue glass votive holders, aqua blue glass vases, palest blue glass bowls, classic vintage -style blue and white dishes–we love them all. Fill them with loosely arranged, long-stemmed dahlias, ranunculus or frilly peonies. Keep the flower colors bright (red, orange, yellow, deep pink), the arrangements unfussy, and don’t be afraid to mix and match a variety of vessels when planning your table setting. Set against a backdrop of crisp, bright white. Did you ever think the blues could make you so darn happy?

Lavish La Colombe d’Or Wedding by J. Cogliandro Photography

Yes, it is possible to have a grand, formal wedding in one of Houston’s most revered venues—the Grand Ballroom of La Colombe d’Or, with its circa-1715 carved oak panels and spectacular chandeliers—AND kick your heels up in true celebration style. Sonila and Matthew’s lovely, lavish spring wedding is a perfect example. Yes, it was utterly elegant, from the Monique Lhuillier invitations to the magnificent rose-and-hydrangea centerpieces. But just look at the newlyweds and their guests—those smiles, that laughter, the FUN of it all. We’re grateful to famed Houston photographer Joe Cogliandro, and the bride and groom, for sharing this beautiful wedding with us. And we’re so happy to share it with you.

Sweet Red, White & Blue Wedding by DC Stanley Photography

We’ve said it before, we’ll say it again: We love a bride who isn’t afraid of a little color. Take Lisa, for instance, who walked down the aisle carrying a bouquet of intense red roses to wed her beloved Ben. Beautiful, right? Even more beautiful is the combination of snow white, rich red and bright aqua blue—the palette of choice at this adorable couple’s ranch reception. We especially love those cylinder centerpieces by Clear Lake Flowers, so simple, so elegant, so WOW. Kudos to fine Houston photographer David Stanley of DC Stanley Photography, whose awesome shots are featured here.
