Though they met many years ago through mutual friends, back then, “The timing just wasn’t right,” says Kevin’s future bride, Julie.
“I was still in school, and long distance relationships can be difficult, so we remained friends for a couple years, hanging out with friends when I would come back to Houston.” Then one fateful day, Kevin asked Julie out on their first real date. “I thought, ‘He is so handsome, and I already know he is such a wonderful guy,’ so I said, ‘Yes.'” Fast-forward to a surprise midweek vacation to Galveston, which found the couple enjoying cocktails at the romantic rooftop bar of The Tremont House. I thought, “‘Oh my gosh, is he going to propose??'” Julie recounts. “But it didn’t happen.” The next morning, as the couple was leaving their hotel, “We walked down to the front of the hotel overlooking the beach…and right up to an arrangement with a bunch of photos of us, flowers, and a sign that read, ‘Marry me.’ I was in shock! I had no idea what was happening at first, he had caught me so off guard.” While planning their wedding, both Julie and Kevin, along with the rest of the city of Houston, were caught off guard by a much less pleasant surprise: Hurricane Harvey.
“The storm brought two feet of water into my parents home,” Julie says, “so we asked them to move in with us. For the next six months, our focused shifted to repairing their home and helping them move back into it. It was emotionally and financially stressful on all of us, but we all grew closer during this time.” Which made the couple’s spring wedding day, when it did arrive, that much more meaningful: “Our wedding design was ‘modern elegance’ with garden accents of pink florals, greenery and marble table numbers and signs. The lighting from the Edison bulbs at The Astorian gave everything a warm glow which was really beautiful. One of our favorite moments was our first look. We ventured to a rooftop in downtown Houston and Kevin waited on the rooftop on the coldest, windiest day of April. I walked up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder and saw the tears in his eyes as he turned around and saw me for the first time. He said, ‘You are so beautiful! I love you!’ It was such an emotional, sweet moment for us. Our first dance as husband and wife was also memorable. We spent countless hours and lessons learning a Viennese Waltz. We danced to ‘Perfect’ by Ed Sheeran. Our dancing wasn’t ‘perfect,’ but we had too much fun dancing, smiling, and laughing with each other, and of our guests loved it. It was so heartwarming to have all of our closest friends and family there to celebrate with us. We loved listening to the toasts and visiting with everyone, but my favorite moment was one we spent alone. At the end of the night, while everyone else was preparing to send us off, we stayed on the dance floor and enjoyed a private last dance. Just the two of us spending our final moments alone together at our wedding was so romantic. It is a moment we will never forget.” And that moment made for a photo that we will never tire of looking at. How beautiful are these two? And how awesome is their story…and their gorgeous Houston spring wedding?? Congratulations, Julie & Kevin. Wishing you a lifetime of love!
