Fellow college athletes Emily and Derrick found their paths crossing often, as soccer players for San Antonio’s Trinity University. The sporty pair started dating at the beginning of their sophomore year…and five years later, Derrick proposed, on a hike during Emily’s annual summer family trip to Telluride, Colo. But the proposal wasn’t all sunshine and roses. In fact, the familiar trail the crew usually took to Hope Lake (Emily’s favorite hike) was still partially covered by snow and ice, much to their dismay. The future groom, however, would not be deterred, and managed to get the group to “stomp through knee-high snow, until we eventually straggled one-by-one to the peak of the hike,” Emily says. It was there that Derrick was able to lead Emily away from their group (who, of course, were all in on the secret, and had been recruited to help pull off the surprise proposal), and ask her the question he had been waiting to ask. The triumphant team “slid down in a hurry to get to dinner in town, at a beautiful restaurant between Telluride and Mountain Village, with windows looking out on the mountains,” Emily recounts. “It truly could not have been more perfect.” We feel pretty much the same way about the now-Austin-based couple’s wedding, held at downtown Houston’s iconic neoclassical venue, the Corinthian Houston.
