Joanna met Shane at their freshman college orientation, quickly sparking a friendship during tutoring sessions for chemistry class (wink, wink). However, they didn’t have their first date until junior year, on Valentine’s Day. “I suppose when you wait that long for a date, you have to go BIG or go home!” the bride says. Just one week after graduating, Shane popped the question while on a hiking trip with Joanna. A custom engagement ring made for a truly unforgettable graduation gift. The ceremony took place at Ashton Gardens in the soft glow of the glass-enclosed chapel. There, the pair exchanged personal written vows in front of 155 guests. The celebration continued in Ashton Gardens’ timeless ballroom, with a feast featuring giant coconut shrimp and, ’cause this here is Texas, y’all, succulent steak. Joanna and Shane ended the night amidst a throng of bubbles for a magical exit. Best wishes to you guys as you start a new adventure together!

Mosquitos. Guacamole. A clever ruse. Oh, how we love a zany proposal story: “I told Shane I wanted to wait until I officially had a degree to be engaged,” says Joanna. “He waited exactly a week after I graduated. We had talked about going on a hike, and finally planned it for that weekend. While on our hike there there were so many mosquitos it looked like a dark fog was following us. We ran out of the woods with about 30 bites each laughing so hard (with me not realizing his proposal plan was falling apart). We found an area that was mosquito-free, sat down for a picnic, and then Shane told me he had something for me. I got extremely suspicious that he was proposing. I thought to myself, ‘Shane can’t propose with a tub of guacamole (my favorite) sitting in between us.’ I start desperately moving the food to the other side of the bench, and he pulls out a PAIR OF EARRINGS. Five minutes later he drops down on one knee and proposes. He wanted to surprise me, the earrings made sure that happened. We met our family and close friends for dinner later and celebrated our love…and the fact that his plan to surprise me actually worked!” How could we not fall in love with this sweet young couple’s love, and the lovely Ashton Gardens wedding that celebrated it? Congratulations, Joanna and Shane, and thank you so much for sharing your humor and enthusiasm with us, and our readers!

Katie and Matt had many casual run-ins since high school, but it wasn’t until what turned out to be a special Christmas break when they reconnected at a mutual friend’s birthday party. “He asked me out to dinner the next day at a Mexican restaurant where we grew up, and the rest was history,” says Katie.
After 4 years of dating long distance, Katie moved to Austin to be with Matt. He suggested that they take a weekend trip to New Orleans since neither of them had been. Katie says, “He planned everything and found a great historic hotel in the heart of the French Quarter. We had a full day of exploring the city, and were getting ready to head to dinner. Matt suggested that we should walk around Jackson Square before going to the restaurant. He began talking about our future, and before I knew it he was on one knee asking me to marry him!”
“Our wedding day was a dream… it was a romantic and intimate celebration with our friends and family. The ceremony was our favorite part—it was the beginning of our lives together and so special to be there in front of our loved ones. The historic charm, candles, and romantic white flowers made the ambiance timeless, classic and elegant,” says Katie.
Congrats to the newlyweds!

Life hack: If you step out of your comfort zone, you might just find your future soulmate! We know Houston bride, Kristen, agrees. She tells us how she happened to meet her future husband when she least expected it: “We met at a crawfish boil in 2015—I didn’t want to attend. I don’t even like crawfish! When I was about to leave, I saw some of his family members whom I knew, so I went by them to say hello, and was introduced to Tarek. We hit it off instantly and started dating… the rest is history!”
When it came time for Tarek to propose, he knew he was going to have to catch Kristen off guard. “I had to attend a work conference in Corpus Christi, and Tarek tagged along. After a long day of being in workshops, he suggested that we go for a nice dinner and get some Champagne. I thought it was peculiar that he wanted to order Champagne…he kept repeating it. I had a feeling he was going to propose after dinner—but it didn’t happen! We went for a stroll on the beach after dinner, and Tarek kneeled down declaring that he found a pearl. I bent down to look for the pearl and saw that he was holding a diamond ring,” says Kristen.
Kristen and Tarek wanted a subtle, yet elegant atmosphere for their wedding. To bring movement to the room, and allow for conversation, they chose mixed-height centerpieces that were not overwhelmingly large. “Our goal was to make the wedding fun, and make sure the guests enjoy themselves,” Kristen says.

“We talked and danced the night away, and even shared chocolate-chip pancakes at iHop,” says Kylie, who fell for her future hubs that fateful night, and eventually married him, in a multi-part wedding celebration that embraced Kylie’s Vietnamese background, and Ryan’s Mexican and American ones. “We wanted to fuse all of our cultures together to make our wedding day unique, and fun for our guests.” And we want to share this awesome Houston couple’s lovely and lively wedding with y’all. So go ahead, enjoy, and join us in wishing the newlyweds love!
“I also loved the idea of a California vineyard wedding, so I incorporated wine corks in the décor along with fresh garlands and lush white flowers,” says Kylie.
Kylie tells us her favorite moment was during their first dance to “Face The Sun” by Miguel.
