“Austin and I went to the same elementary school, but being in different grades, we didn’t know each other well,” says bride Emily. But, fatefully it turns out, their mothers became close friends in recent years, and Austin’s mom invited Emily’s family to attend her 93-year-old uncle’s wedding, at her house, to his 84-year-old girlfriend (!!). Emily attended the nuptial celebration, and, well…who wouldn’t be prompted to fall in love in the presence of such a wedding! For the couple’s own marriage celebration, Galveston was a natural choice: “Both of us have over 100 years of family connections to the island,” Emily explains, noting that her grandparents had their own wedding reception at Hotel Galvez & Spa (Austin and Emily’s choice of venue), in 1946. Their Catholic ceremony included a special message imparted by Pope Francis on how to love one another during marriage, which Emily counts as a highlight of their wedding day. For their reception, the hotel’s famed Music Hall was decorated with lush flowers in shades of blush and ivory, and tabletop decor featuring pops of midnight blue and sparkling gold.
