\u201cThe pinnacle of my career\u201d is how Darryl Murchison describes his recent work as designer of the Texas State Society\u2019s \u201cBlack Tie & Boots\u201d bash at the 2013 presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C. And when you\u2019re talking about a 24-year career that\u2019s included some of the most prestigious corporate, fundraising, high society and private events in Houston (and other cities\u2014our Mr. Murchison\u2019s crazy-amazing talents are in demand from coast to coast, natch), including too many breathtaking weddings to count\u2014well, that\u2019s quite a pinnacle, indeed.<\/p>\n

The Pitch<\/strong><\/p>\n

As founder and creative director of legendary Houston event-design firm Darryl & Co.<\/a>, Murchison was the top pick of Ward & Ames Special Events, the official producer of the 2013 Black Tie & Boots event. \u201cThey brought this to me and said, \u2018We need you, your vision, your creativity. Would you be a partner with us on the event?\u2019\u201d\u2014one of several inaugural celebrations, and, though technically an \u201cunofficial\u201d ball, the hottest ticket in D.C. that weekend. \u201cI presented to them and to Texas State Society, and from there, it was a very quick process. I was in.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Party<\/strong><\/p>\n

Held at the Gaylord National Harbor Resort on the Potomac River, the 8,000-attendee event was pure Texas, from the proliferation of yellow roses, to the Kilgore Rangerettes, to the Texas A&M Aggies, to a performance by country legend Charley Pride. It was also pure patriotism\u2014but not the plain ol\u2019 stars-and-stripes kind.<\/p>\n

The client said, \u2018We don\u2019t want to see overload of red, white and blue bunting,\u201d which was perfectly fine with out-of-the-box designer Darryl M. Instead, the client said, \u201c\u2018Imagine the Driskill Hotel bar in Austin,\u2019\u201d (one of our faves, btw\u2014we love how the amber lighting illuminates our Manhattan), which Murchison did, and delivered a party palette of \u201cburgundy, deep blue, tea-stained colors,\u201d which went right along with the party\u2019s \u201cvintage, nostalgic, back-to-Texas-roots\u201d theme.<\/p>\n
