5 Reasons to Wed at the Historic Magnolia Ballroom

Built in the late 1800s, and the site of countless elaborate weddings, rehearsal dinners, bridal luncheons and more, for the past 30 years, The Historic Magnolia Ballroom is one of the oldest properties in Houston and is listed in the National Registry of Historic Places. With its Victorian elegance and true Texan charm, it’s one of the city’s hidden gems, perfect for wedding events with a vintage vibe. We talked with venue manager Renee Pool about why modern wedding couples might want to begin their lifetime of happiness at a Houston wedding venue that has stood as a landmark for many lifetimes. Here are a few reasons:

The Story — Every historic venue in Houston comes with its own story, and couples who wed there become a part of that story! The Historic Magnolia Ballroom, for instance, once served as the executive offices for Houston’s Magnolia Brewery, where downtown workers would gather for 5-cent beers and sandwiches, while the elite would gather at the brewery to enjoy exclusive beer tastings. “There are so many wonderful venues opening up everywhere all the time, but you can’t give a place history,” says Renee Pool.

Decor in Place — Many historic buildings in Houston are full of ornate details and interior accents that you just don’t see in modern event spaces. “The space is not a blank canvas. It has its own flair and its own style,” Pool says. “The original tiles on the walls, the oak flooring, beautiful chandeliers and the wood-lined walls provide decoration themselves. It’s perfect for those brides not looking to be overly lavish with their decorations. The space speaks for itself.”

Event Flow — What other venues might have in wide-open space, The Historic Magnolia Ballroom makes up for with distinctive, turn-of-the-century-style rooms that allow guests to move seamlessly through the wedding celebration. Start with a cocktail at the polished bar, next mosey on to enjoy an elaborate seated or buffet-style meal, then head to the dance floor amid the cypress-and-leaded-glass windows and vaulted ceilings.

Theme Scheme — Though this historic venue can lend itself to any wedding style, “Many of our most elaborate weddings tie into the prohibition, speakeasy feel,” Pool says. “They are not costume-required, but the couples definitely try to work in the overall feel of the place.” Going for Gatsby glam, or vying for Victorian va-va-voom? A historic venue will put you a step above the rest.

Prime Location —  Set on the edge of Buffalo Bayou and walking distance to the heart of downtown, The Historic Magnolia Ballroom provides couples and guests with a central location and access to all of the hotels, bars and restaurants they could want, along with an intimate, tucked-away setting for celebration.

Colorful Spring Wedding by Serendipity Photography

Almost a decade of dating and an intense game of “Super Mario World” brought childhood acquaintances Jennifer and Sean together forever.

“It happened at home, which is very us. He had somehow managed to write ‘Will you marry me?’ in a ‘Super Mario World’ game,” Jennifer says, though she didn’t realize at first that the words were meant for her!
A resounding “yes” and 11 months later, the couple wed in a lush garden on a sunny March day among 68 of their closest friends and family.

“We knew that we didn’t want a huge wedding,” Jennifer says. “We loved how intimate and personal it felt and that we were able to spend time with everyone who attended.”

Adding to the intimacy of the affair, Jennifer’s sister designed all of the couple’s wedding invitations and stationery, and Sean’s best friend officiated the ceremony!

A more relaxed add-on to the traditional wedding cake, warm chocolatey cookies served with a glass of ice-cold milk (or maybe a cocktail!) is a wedding trend we can so get behind at Weddings in Houston. We’ve seen wedding couples use Tiff’s as late-night snacks, grooms’ cakes and much, much more! Here are six creative ways we recommend using Tiff’s Treats’ freshly baked cookies, brownies and ice cream to make your wedding celebrations even sweeter!

“Be My Bridesmaid” or “Be My Groomsman” Gifts — Did you know that Tiff’s delivers cookies all around Texas, and that when they arrive they are magically fresh-out-the-oven warm? What better way to spoil your wedding party/convince them to say “yes,” than with snacks that will make them feel more and more of chocolate’s love-mimicking endorphin rush with every bite?

Welcome Box for Traveling Guests — Tiff’s offers mini-boxes of two to four cookies that are the perfect way to plan a warm Texas welcome for your guests!

To Send to Your Boo If you’re a stickler for tradition, you know you’re not allowed to be talking to your soon-to-be-spouse prior to your wedding ceremony. But there aren’t rules about sending sweet surprises! If you’re already planning to leave your partner a personal letter or gift on the big day, why not accompany it with a box of delicious cookies? And brides, we promise one cookie won’t ruin your bridal gown diet.

Double Up for an Ice Cream Sandwich — Commonly know as a “Tiffwich,” Tiff’s Treats combines frosty Blue Bell vanilla ice cream with your favorite cookie flavors to create a delectable ice cream sandwich! Tiff’s will bring its signature warm cookies to your venue and make the cool treats for your guests on site. How much fun is that??

Perfect Party Favors — Leave your wedding guests with one final taste of your wedding theme with boxes of Tiff’s Treats waiting for them at the door. Add a sweet message or ribbon from your color palette to tie it all together!

Wedding Video Q&A with 31 Films’ Joey Mathews

Joey Mathews, owner of Houston-based wedding videography company 31 Films, puts his love of family and personal moments into each of his heartfelt wedding videos. Though 31 Films’ work speaks for itself, we wanted to get the behind-the-scenes details on how Mathews and his team create wedding videos and trailers that leave us in tears, every. single. time. Keep reading to see how Mathews’ “passion thing” evolved into one of  Houston’s top wedding videography companies, and view 31 Films’ amazing work!

Houston Wedding Blog: How did you get started in Houston’s wedding videography biz?

Joey Mathews: We started back in 2002 and there wasn’t really a business strategy. We were just really passionate about filmmaking and we did a few weddings for friends just for fun. Before we knew it, we were like, “this is actually a job!” For us, it was very much a passion thing that organically snowballed through the years and became what it is today.

HWB: How would you describe 31 Films’ aesthetic?

JM: Our aesthetic is walking the line of “cinematic-beautiful” and true documentary. Early on we wanted to just get all these really cool shots and wow people. But as we got older and had families of our own, we started to recognize how meaningful true emotional moments are at weddings.

HWB: What is your advice to couples for getting wedding videos they’ll treasure forever?

JM: A lot about telling couples’ stories in a meaningful and personal way comes from personal details and little mini-stories that the couple has. Any time that a couple can show their love for each other — a lot of times that is through a letter that they read for each other on their wedding day — it adds so much meaning. As they get older and they start having kids, for those kids to be able to hear what Mom and Dad’s voice sounded like and how they felt about each other on that day…those are the types of moments that we encourage our couples to think about. If they don’t do any of those things the video ends up being event, to event, to event.

Beyond that, when we are shooting it is really about the couple having a blast and us not getting in the way. If the couple can be themselves and really have a great time, we will be able to capture those moments naturally.

HWB: What shots do wedding couples tell you they liked the most?

JM: When the couple gets introduced to the reception we will usually film a really wide angled shot following right behind them, and for them it relives that reveal of the room and reveal of all their closest friends and family cheering them on. Also getting time with the couple typically after the ceremony to get romantic footage that isn’t super posed, but is just them being together, is important. I think couples really love when they see those shots and we take a lot of pride in being able to get great magical moments within three minutes!

HWB: In your opinion what makes 31 Films really stand out as a wedding videographer?

JM: We pay really close attention to story, and how we edit that story together really helps us stand out. When I say story, I mean capturing the emotion of the day, the love between the couple, the families and how they all interact. Most brides say that they look at other filmmakers, and their stuff looks great, but they don’t really feel the way they do when they watch our films. There is so much that goes into filmmaking so it’s hard to say it’s one thing, but at the end of the day, I think it really comes down to how we put the story together in an emotional way that’s not overly-epic, but is true.
