In addition to top local wedding pros, the Houston Astros along with ballpark catering provider ARAMARK will have a booth showcasing great stuff like baseball-themed engagement and bridal portraits, rehearsal dinners, and ceremonies and receptions at Minute Maid Park.

We checked in with Katy Preisler, assistant sales director for special events for the Houston Astros Baseball Club, and she assured us that brides and grooms won’t want to miss checking out this “perfect venue for an unforgettable evening.” As for having your wedding at Minute Maid Park, Preisler tells us, “Out of town guests enjoy visiting our classic ballpark, brides love the elegant columns and architecture of the space, and grooms can boast that they really are in the Big Leagues after tying the knot.” We love it!

High Fashion Fabrics Takes Wedding Style to New High

There’s a new name in Houston wedding rentals…that just happens to be a very familiar name in fabrics. You may know High Fashion Fabrics as Houston’s largest fabric store—the place to go if you’re in the market for a few yards of cool Calaveras skull-patterned cotton or a handful of sparkling crystal buttons.

Well, now High Fashion is also the place to go if you’re looking for a totally unique table linen or, say, a few hundred sleek acrylic dining chairs. You see, about a year ago, a friend of High Fashion manager Dolley Levan’s was getting married and couldn’t seem to find the perfect cloths for her wedding tables. Levan and team came to her rescue, and shortly thereafter decided to start offering linen rental to customers. The service has been “very well received,” Levan tells the Houston Wedding Blog—so much so that High Fashion is now offering chic lounge furniture and unique table seating, along with the kind of fashion-forward table linen you just won’t find anywhere else in town.

Like Confetti a textured taffeta style that looks like it might have just walked off a Paris runway, and gives the impression of shimmering coins or rippled water. So chic! Or how about Eden Floral—a fabulous sheer overlay with appliquéd flowers and leaves, which “acts as floral itself,” Levan says. She recommends pairing it with contemporary centerpieces featuring branches and crystals, rather than an abundance of cut blooms. Then there’s the super-hip Ivory & Black Paris Flocked Damask Shantung. As linen names go, it’s a bit of a mouthful. As linen styles go, it’s utterly gorgeous.

Of course, this being Houston and all, High Fashion feeds the needs of traditional Southern brides, too. They’ve got regal ivory damask, luxurious bisque peau-de-soie satin and solid taffetas in a rainbow of shades, plus many other elegant styles.

A Wedding Handbag with Attitude

So you may have noticed that we here at the HWB have a thing for shoes and bags. Kinda like you. After all, without the perfect accessories, what is a bridal gown but just a really, really nice white dress?

Houston Wedding Baker Makes Good, and Great Cakes, Too!

Boy, does Janice Jucker have an amazing attitude. The president of Houston’s venerable Three Brothers Bakery and 2009 winner of the NAWBO (National Association of Women Business Owners) Houston Woman Business Owner of the Year award says that had she not battled incredible adversity—being battered by hurricanes AND diagnosed with breast cancer—she might not have won the award, “So everything happens for a reason!”

In addition to her heroic work saving Three Brothers after the onslaught of Ike, NAWBO honored Jucker for leading a group of vendors to provide IT services to Reliant Park, where Katrina evacuees were being housed. Those services allowed evacuees to connect with family, friends and loved ones during a time of unprecedented crisis.

So isn’t it just fitting that Jucker’s 60-year-old family bakery creates certified Kosher, certified delicious desserts and other sweet indulgences for many of life’s most important family reunions? And isn’t it lucky for us that she specializes in gorgeous, too-divine-to-decline-a-slice wedding cakes??

Speaking of cakes, Jucker, who got her start at New York’s famed Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, has been tracking wedding cake trends, and she’s got the inside scoop, plus great suggestions for the cake-shopping bride.

Here’s what she says…

About flavors: “Flavors seem to be moving back to comfort flavors. The top flavors chosen by our brides are a white genoise with amaretto buttercream or caramel buttercream (caramel is dairy, but it can sit out because it is cooked already), and a yellow cake with a fudge filling and buttercream icing. When we do a fondant I always try to steer our brides toward a filling with buttercream, so they get the best of both worlds.”

About colors: “We’re seeing gold again, which I love, for I feel it is so very elegant.
Coral and deep purple (eggplant) are definitely colors to highlight at weddings. Black and white are also still quite prominent, and bling is always in.”

About decoration: “Toppers are moving out. Spirals of sugar flowers are gorgeous. Nothing is more beautiful than handmade roses. I’m also developing a new affinity for magnolias–they are big and bold. I love them. Technology has allowed us to be able to take a pattern and cut it with great precision to create great patterns on cakes. We can work with some of the most intricate patterns now.”

About groom’s cakes: “My husband loves grooms cakes because he gets to design something fun. He is a master builder and can create mechanical accents as well. Two years ago he designed an 8 ½-foot oil derrick that shot 3 ½ feet of fire and chocolate oil!”
Jucker, who is healthy, happy and looking forward to many more years of baking, says her favorite part of working with wedding couples is hearing their stories. “I like to ask the brides how they met their fiancé. I love looking at their dresses to gain inspiration. You really get to know them.” She sighs, “I just love weddings.”

A Sophisticated New Space for Weddings by Debbie

Though it’s been in its beautiful Katy/West Houston location since fall, Weddings by Debbie is still enjoying that new salon smell. As for Houston area brides, they’re elegant, sophisticated look and larger size of the new store, located at 20235-B Katy Freeway, Katy, TX 77450.

We checked in with WBD vice president AJ Ruley, who told us that brides are big fans of the salon’s large dressing rooms, “enormous viewing area” and plentiful mirrors, which allow each bride to view each dress she tries on from a variety of angles. “Our atmosphere promotes beauty and sophistication,” she says, adding, “We make every effort to make each girl feel special.”

Not only has WBD’s space gotten bigger and more beautiful, so has its selection of designer gowns, at different price points to accommodate a variety of budgets. “We added Rosa Clara, another designer out of Spain, and we added new collections of established designers already in the store, such as Matthew Christopher, Stephen Yearick, Lazaro, Jim Hjelm, Alvina Valenta, Tara Keely and Manuel Mota of Pronovias, while buying even deeper into other lines represented heavily in our store,” explains Ruley. Need a little style advice? She notes that the classic ballgown is the “it” style this season, especially when paired with a long veil and colored shoes.

Speaking of which…WBD has also upped its inventory of footwear and accessories—bonus! “We also added new collections of Accents by Alexis which is a local veil and jewelry company that is on the rise and can turn around merchandise for quick brides and for brides that want more customized jewelry for their special day,” Ruley says. Plus, WBD now carries shoes from British footwear firm Benjamin Adams Shoe Co., which offers shoes to coordinate with all WBD gowns, and silk shoes in different colors—“Awesome!” says Ruley

As if all this wasn’t cool enough, WBD plans to launch a fabulous new website next month, so keep an eye out for it, and tell a to-be-wed friend!
