Elegant Blush, White and Green Garden Theme Wedding

WEDDINGS IN HOUSTON Spring 2015 | Real Wedding Feature

Kelli & A.J. ~ May 17, 2014

Having begun their courtship at the University of Georgia, it’s no surprise that Kelli and A.J. wanted their wedding to “feel like an elegant garden party at a Southern home.” As the bride describes, “The ambiance began with a drive up scenic River Oaks Blvd. with Houston’s most beautiful homes,” and continued with a gracious country-club setting, decorated with soft-pink peonies, mercury-glass votives, twinkle-lights and French armchairs. A reception menu filled with Southern favorites—fried green tomatoes, shrimp and grits, pulled-pork sliders—nourished guests for a night of dancing to live music. As the night progressed, guests enjoyed hand-rolled Cuban cigars on the starlit patio, and late-night chicken-and-waffle bites. Jo Ann Schwartz Woodward (of wedding consulting firm Schwartz & Woodward) was great at listening to our vision and implementing it flawlessly,” Kelli says. “It was truly the wedding of our dreams!”

A Memorable Event Hosts Two Top Wedding Celebs

Earlier this week, hot Houston decor, floral and fine-event-rentals outfit A Memorable Event hosted celebrity wedding planner Mindy Weiss and famed international floral designer Jeff Leatham, along with a selection of Houston’s top event professionals and media…and WHAT a memorable event it was. We were thrilled to attend this lovely luncheon and design showcase (yup, that’s a picture of our very own Radhika Day, founder and publisher of Weddings in Houston, cozied up to the brilliant Jeff Leatham). And, after all, who wouldn’t be? Both Weiss (wedding planner to stars including Adam Sandler, Eva Longoria, Jessica Simpson and MANY more) and Leatham (artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris and author of “Jeff Leatham: Visionary Art and Floral Design,” among other gorgeous flower-focused books) spoke extensively about their lives, work and approaches to event design. And WE ate it up. Along with lots of yumminess from the talented catering crew at the Westin Galleria, host hotel for this fabulous event. As for the floral and tabletop displays? WOW. Just…WOW. Thanks so much to the wonderful staff of A Memorable Event for a fantastic day of inspiration, elegance and knowledge!

Light Fantastic: The ABCs of LEDs

Let’s take a little break from flowers and frills and finery to get technical for a moment, shall we? Along with all that lovely stuff, good lighting will go a long way toward transforming your reception space and creating ambiance at your wedding, Houston bride.

One of the most exciting technologies in wedding lighting is the LED, or light-emitting diode. LED lighting can wash a room in color, highlight key reception spots (like cake tables and lounge areas), and create fabulous effects. But, says Frank Tritico of Houston’s Bright Star Productions, “Unless a client knows there is a difference in LED lights, they could get duped and ultimately be disappointed by either a well-intentioned decorator or florist, or a less reputable lighting company.”

So what do Houston brides need to know about LEDs? “Remember your color wheel in 5th grade art? It showed that we could make a whole range of new colors by mixing red, green and blue. This is what an LED does to make many hundreds of colors,” Tritico explains. But he adds that while LED lights are incredibly versatile, “They’re still a new technology and evolving.”

Tritico points out that older LEDs and less professional equipment aren’t able to produce amber or white light. That means they can’t create many of our most coveted wedding colors, like lavender, peach, Tiffany blue and cranberry.

Also, if a wall is being lit by an LED and a halo of red, green and blue light is visible, “This is an indication that the LED doesn’t have the ability to be lensed correctly and therefore can’t disburse the light evenly,” the lighting pro warns. “It might look great on the ceiling, but be an embarrassment on the walls where it counts.” Yikes!

Tritico advises brides who are interested in LED lighting to ask their lighting and sound company—along with Bright Star, Pro Sound and Tech Ave are among Houston’s best—for a demonstration. “A client will see the difference instantly,” he says.
Thanks, Frank, for lighting the way!
