6 Tips For Managing Bridesmaids (So That They Still Love You When The Big Day Is Done)

Now that you’ve said yes to your fiancé, one of the first things you’re likely to focus on is gathering your closest gal pals to be a part of your big day. And while choosing and inviting your bridesmaids to be at your side can be lots of fun, actually being a bridesmaid can be, well…a lot of work. Reduce your gals’ stress, and show them how much you appreciate all they have done, and are doing, for you, but managing their feelings, and their workload, with kindness and love. These six tips will guide the way!

1. Before asking anyone to be a part of your “bride tribe,” make sure you have the details regarding your wedding date, venue and level of formality. Also try to limit your bridesmaids to those girls you know will still be in your life in 10 years.

2. Allow for at least six months of planning for your bridesmaids to get their dresses and reserve vacation time or days off from work.

3. Be sure to let them know what they will be financially responsible for. This includes attire, makeup, hair, travel and/or accommodations. It’s best to give them this information as early as possible, so that they can budget for these expenses (and ask for help with them, if needed).

4. As bridesmaids, your girls will be attending your nuptial ceremony and reception for sure. However, if you are having multiple other wedding-related events, let them know which ones require their attendance, so that they can make room on their calendars.

5. You, as the bride, have the final say on what your bridesmaids will wear on your wedding day. But here’s a suggestion: To make sure that your bridesmaids feel good in what they’re wearing, choose a color and let your girls have few (or more) options when it comes to their dress style and bridesmaid shoes.  Your friends will appreciate you taking into account their comfort by allowing them to each select a style that flatters her figure, and a heel height that she can manage when walking, and dancing.

6. If your maid of honor doesn’t seem too enthused with her duties, don’t jump the gun and “fire her” from the title, or risk losing a close relationship. She may be feeling overwhelmed with her duties. Instead let her step down herself by telling her it’s OK if she’s not up to it, and ensuring her that you’ll always love her, no matter what.

6 Cool Bridesmaids Bags Your Gals Will Use Over and Over Again

Your b’maids do so much sweet stuff for you. Here’s something sweet you can do for them: Gift them with bridesmaids bags they’ll clutch with joy on your wedding day, and use, with fond memories, and a ton of style, long after. Here are a handful of our faves!

Bridesmaids Bag Totally Crushin Pink Velvet Clutch: Lulu’s

How To Pack The Perfect Wedding-Day Emergency Kit

Bridal-Kit

Whether you’re packing your own bridal bag (aka the wedding-day emergency kit) or having your MOH get one ready for you, you’ll want to make sure not to leave out a single wedding-day essential! You can go ahead and start getting your bridal must-haves ready a month before the big day, using our handy list of 10 wedding-day essentials as your guide:

  1. Snacks. You may not feel hungry with all the excitement surrounding you on your wedding day, but you’re going to need energy for this major celebration. Nuts or granola bars are a great source of protein, and will keep for months before your big day.
  2. Toothbrush and toothpaste. Buy a travel size of each to keep in your bag. You wouldn’t want to say your “I do” with anything less than fresh breath.
  3. A garment steamer. If you have a handheld one on hand you’re already winning! If not, get one. It’s an essential tool for smoothing out stubborn gown wrinkles, and can be used for last-minute clothing touch-ups for years to come!
  4. Bobby pins and hair ties. There are going to be lots of girls. Someone is going to need them, right?
  5. Sewing kit. A popped button or dropped hem is never good news. Having needle, thread and hem tape handy will save the day in a pinch.
  6. Mints, not gum. You don’t want to be captured on film chomping away like it’s nobody’s business, after all.
  7. Band-Aids. You’ll be wearing your bridal heels for hours. Even if you’ve made a pre-wedding effort to break them in, you’ll almost certainly have a few blisters or sore spots as the night progresses.
  8. Nail polish. Be sure to pack a bottle of your wedding-day nail color. Your bridesmaids should do the same. Chipped nails are a definite no-no in those detail shots your photographer is going to take!
  9. Lipstick & lip liner. You’ll be kissing your freshly minted spouse all night. Make sure your lip color is locked in or refreshed for photos.
  10. Blotting papers. A quick press to absorb any oil or sweat that may have snuck out to your skin’s surface, followed by sweep of translucent powder, will have you looking fresh and shine-free, in person, and in pix!

How to Choose Mix-And-Match Bridesmaids Dresses with Bella Bridesmaids

We all have those free-spirited friends, reserved beauties or fiery fashionistas in our bridal party that we just can’t imagine saying “I do” without. One of our favorite ways that brides balance each of their bridesmaids’ different styles (and opinions) with their cohesive wedding look is through the mix-and-match bridesmaid dress trend. But experts and brides agree that pulling it off is a lot more challenging than it seems.

“Mix-and-match is really a look that takes a lot of effort to make it look effortless,” says Stephanie Wilkinson, co-owner of beloved Houston bridesmaids dress boutique, Bella Bridesmaids. We talked with Wilkinson, co-owner Natalie Taylor, and their team, about how to make the mix-and-match look more manageable. Here’s what they had to say:

Give Them Something to Work With — Though the team at Bella Bridesmaids are experts in selecting the best fit and style for each of your gals, Lindsay Provost, manager of Bella Bridesmaids’ Houston location, urges brides to have at least one solid idea of how she wants her girls to look before embarking on this mix-and-match journey. “It’s really helpful if they have at least a color or fabric nailed down and set in stone,” she says. “That’s what we can start with, and work from there.”

Think Texture — When planning a mix-and-match look, don’t limit yourself to just differing colors or style. Bella Bridesmaids co-owner Natalie Taylor advises brides not to be afraid of bringing in different textures! “Texture is what really makes a mix-and-match look successful,” she says. “When there is lace, and maybe some metallic or tulle, it looks purposeful and intentional.”

Keep it Short… or Long — Color, texture and designs can differ from bridesmaid to bridesmaid, but Taylor warns that mixing floor-length dresses with cocktail dresses is a big no-no. “A high-low dress and a floor-length dress would probably be okay, but we would stay away from a short and a long,” she says.

Stick with a Designer — Bridesmaid dress designers typically use similar color tones and textures across their styles, which helps brides keep things cohesive. “A lot of the time we will stick with one designer,” Provost says.  “Bridesmaids can still get that mix-and-match look with different necklines in the same shades of color.” One designer that Provost highly recommends for achieving a flawless mix-and-match look is the simple and refined Amsale.

Trust the Process — Patience is key when selecting your mix-and-match bridesmaids pieces. The team at Bella Bridesmaids will guide you as you carefully select your options, but it does take time. “I start with one thing first, either a fabric or a color,” Provost says. “I will pull one color and then move on to what our next shade would be. It’s a step-by-step process.”
