Whew. It’s been an exhilarating (read: kind of crazy) couple of months, what with working on soon-to-be-launched redesigns of the Weddings in Houston website and this here blog, not to mention putting together the big, beautiful, bursting-with-inspiration January print issue of Weddings in Houston.
Of course, in the midst of this delightful madness, the New York bridal market just wrapped, and we are so excited to treat you to a preview of our favorite fall 2011 collections, straight from the market runways.
So let’s just start with a bang shall we? Bridal couture darling Rivini staged its show at the Alvin Ailey Theater, home of the legendary Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. Which would have been cool enough. But then there were the gowns—oh, what gowns. Inspired by the French impressionist Claude Monet’s gardens at Giverny, designer Rita Vinieris created a magnificently textured collection featuring extraordinary pleating, layering, tufting and draping—in other words, lots of working of fabric that somehow never looked overworked.
We checked in with Emily Sutton of Mia Bridal Couture for her take on the Rivini fall 2011 collection, and here’s what she told us: “Seeing these gowns on the runway whisks you away to [Monet’s gardens]. Rita manipulated the structural details to provide strong silhouettes with effortless movement.” Sutton says she loves how the collection’s bold lines “were softened by floral motifs and organic draping.”
Plus, we LOVE Rivini’s use of black and blingy belts, and chunky jewelry, as edgy counterpoints to these romantic gowns.
Check out our favorite designs from the Rivini collection—and check baclk over the next few weeks (or better yet subscribe to WIH and let US come to YOU) for more fall 2011 previews!

You love Astros baseball. He loves Astros baseball. You love wedding stuff. He loves…Astros baseball. OK, so maybe you’ll be the one doing most of the oohing and aahing over the lavish linen and gorgeous décor and fabulous flowers at the first-ever Houston Astros Weddings Showcase. But he’ll be at your side, nodding and smiling supportively, and after you’ve checked out the 20 or so awesome Houston wedding vendors and daintily sampled the decadent cakes on display, you can gobble down Diablo Dogs and cheer yourself silly at the Astros/Rays game!
It all starts at 1 p.m. on Sat. May 22 in Minute Maid Park’s Union Station Lobby. In addition to top local wedding pros, the Houston Astros along with ballpark catering provider ARAMARK will have a booth showcasing great stuff like baseball-themed engagement and bridal portraits, rehearsal dinners, and ceremonies and receptions at Minute Maid Park.
We checked in with Katy Preisler, assistant sales director for special events for the Houston Astros Baseball Club, and she assured us that brides and grooms won’t want to miss checking out this “perfect venue for an unforgettable evening.” As for having your wedding at Minute Maid Park, Preisler tells us, “Out of town guests enjoy visiting our classic ballpark, brides love the elegant columns and architecture of the space, and grooms can boast that they really are in the Big Leagues after tying the knot.” We love it!
And because we know you’ll love it too, we’re giving away tickets to brides who share their insanely romantic, “I-can’t-believe-he-did-that” PROPOSAL stories. Tickets go to the most romantic proposal tales, so if you’ve got a doozy, lay it on us right here. He knocked it out of the park, right? Now you get a chance to watch the Astros do the same—while enjoying a winning wedding showcase. Score!
Remember this mouthwatering post from a few weeks back on Houston foodie fave Campbell’s Catering? Yummy, right? Well, sure, it’s fun to read about fabulous food—but it’s a whole lot more fun to EAT it. Take advantage of Campbell’s open house this Saturday, April 10 from noon to 2 p.m. and sample this in-demand Houston catering company’s hospitality and culinary know-how firsthand. We’ve tasted Courtney Campbell & crew’s divine specialties (Duck wontons? Shrimp cocktail shooters? Gourmet BBQ-filled potato boats? OMG. TDF.) and you will NOT want to miss this opportunity.
Moving on from food to fashion, we recommend the Angel Sanchez trunk show at Maison de Mode, this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, April. 9-11. Reps of the design house will be lavishing personalized attention on attending brides as they show off beautifully made gowns from the celebrated Venezuelan bridal designer. Expect plenty of lustrous silk, romantic tulle and delightful touches such as metallic thread, handkerchief hems and impeccable embroidery. Brides who purchase their gowns at this special event get a 15% discount…and the ability to say with pride that they’re getting married in Angel Sanchez. Très chic.
