The founder and lead designer of Events in Bloom started his Houston shop in 1998, when he finally realized his passion for floral design, and he’s been creating unfussy yet totally fabulous floral arrangements for weddings and events ever since.

“What flowers do for spaces is offer a graceful, feminine line,” the designer says. “Nothing else is like a flower—live, irregular-shaped, soft, delicate.”

Smith advises brides who have not yet decided on their floral look to consider the space where their wedding will take place: “Respect that first, and then pick out key parts you know you love,” he suggests.

“Most people will have opinion about kinds of flowers they like, whether exotics, garden flowers, etc.” Also, he guides brides “to be in season” with their choices, “because it helps with money and the quality of the flowers.”
